What Are Grants?

Money given as a grant does not need to be repaid. The three most common are the foundation, corporate, and government grants. Grants can range from a few hundred dollars up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the funder. In the United States alone, there are over 70,000 charitable organizations. Funding organizations have a variety of philanthropic goals; some invest in youth or senior services, others finance scientific research, and others aim to effect positive social change.
